Lab grown diamonds have raised a lot of hype, recently. They have been seen on several celebrities such as, Emma Watson, Lady Gaga, Bindi Irwin, Nikki Reed, Penelope Cruz, Megan Markle, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Lab diamonds are different from natural diamonds because they are artificially created in a laboratory, instead of naturally produced in the earth.

What is a lab grown diamond?

Lab grown diamonds are created in a laboratory rather than occurring in nature and mined from the earth. Some laboratories use technology to mimic the conditions that natural diamonds undergo when they form beneath the earth’s crust. This is the main difference that sets lab grown diamonds apart from natural ones.  Fun Fact: Lab grown diamonds have essentially all of the same chemical, optical and physical properties and crystal structure as natural diamonds.


How are Lab Grown Diamonds Made? 

The two most common processes use to create lab-grown diamonds are..

  1. High Pressure, High Temperature

With this method, lab grown diamonds are produced by mimicing the high pressure, high temperature conditions of natural diamond formation in the earth.

2. Chemical Vapor Deposition

This newer technique allows scientists to create lab grown diamonds using moderate temperatures and lower pressures. Carbon containing gas is pumped into a chamber, depositing onto a diamond seed and crystallizing as synthetic diamond.


Lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds are identical to the eye, even a professional gemologist will need specialized equipment to tell.  They have almost identical chemical structures as natural diamonds. A lab diamond has the same brilliance as a natural one. Lab grown diamonds look and feel like natural diamonds. They are available in all shapes and sizes. 



Lab-created diamonds are graded and certified using the same process as mined diamonds. All Hattie Banks lab grown diamonds come with a IGI Certificate or GCAL certificate.

  • IGI (International Gemological Institute): Is an institute is actually the second most world known lab in the world which you can find.
  • GCAL: is a research laboratory which is specialized in guaranteed diamond grading.


Lab grown diamonds cost 30% less than mined diamond. The difference is due to supply. Natural diamond supply is limited, due to the billions of years it takes for nature to create diamonds. Lab grown diamonds, there is no end on the supply, which drives the price lower and lower as supply goes up.


While natural diamonds often retain around 50% of their value, lab grown diamonds do not hold the same value. You can lose a percentage of its value the moment you make the purchase.

You must consider how the cost of real diamonds vs. lab grown diamonds changes over time. With lab-created diamonds being in heavy supply, and natural diamonds historically rising in value, your lab grown diamond will be worth less than a natural one of similar grade.


Lab grown diamonds are better for the environment because they are created in a controlled environment with minimal environmental impact. Natural diamonds, on the other hand, also have a great impact on economies. For example,  the majority of the world’s diamonds come from sources that use the revenues generated by diamonds to help their national development. Diamonds are an important source of revenue for building countries infrastructure and essential social services, such as hospitals and schools.
